Mr. Popper’s Penguins tell of a loveable character named Mr. Popper who dreams of being in intrepid Antarctic explorer. He is shocked one day when a friend sends him a package containing a real, live penguin! Soon, this penguin is joined by another and before long Mr. Popper has an ice rink in his house and a dozen delightful penguins living in his house. Mr. Popper’s Penguins is a Caldecott and Newbery Medal winner offering delightfully humorous illustrations and a charming story sure to be a favorite!
Each unit study contains educational lessons, activities and a fun lap book that your students will work on as they progress through the book. They also include book reports, vocabulary, critical thinking, story timelines, and comprehension. These studies are geared towards grades Kindergarten-4th, but can probably be adapted for older students as well.
I designed them to give students something fun to do along with the stories to help them remember what they’ve learned in a fun hands-on way. The lap books included are wonderful for reviewing subject matter, and a great creative interactive homeschooling tool.
In this unit students will learn all about penguins including different types, the penguin food chain, and vocabulary.
They will also do a character analysis of main characters in the story, alphabetize Mr. Popper’s penguins, write their own penguin poem, and learn about different occupations.
The units also include forms for predicting story plots, character analysis, identifying the protagonist and antagonist, a story timeline, and a final book report on the novel.
